A function
is the purpose that we have to communicate because when we are speaking or
writing we are trying to convey something. It could be for apologizing,
refusing, advising, agreeing, thanking, etc. We also take into account the context in which we are.
For example:
Context: a girl said something bad to her mother but she is
sorry for that.
Exponent: "I'm really sorry"
Function: Apologizing
Furthermore, an exponent can enunciate different
functions depending on the context. So we can have different levels of formality: formal, informal or colloquial and neutral. Example:
In this way, we also choose the level of formality
according to the situation. It is called appropiacy. Example: a boy greeting an elderly.
Appropriate: Good morning.
Inappropriate: What's up?
Additionally, the variety of language we use according
to the setting or situation is called register. Example: Bye - informal register, Good
bye/See you soon - formal register.
Finally, to teach this unit I would base on the Functional
Approach that according to Ewing (2001) it is a methodology that allows the
student to construct meaning for different purposes. So I would teach my
students language in chunks in order that they can learn some exponents for
greeting, complaining, etc. In addition, I would like to combine grammar and
functions in order that learners can understand meaning, context and grammar structures. In this way, according to Finocchiar & Brumfit (1983)
combining grammar and functions help students to be able to use language in
real-life situations.
